2024 Presidential Address
Mark Apsey MBE was officially declared IChemE’s 83rd President at the Annual General Meeting on 11 June 2024, and marked the occasion by delivering his Presidential Address on 13 June 2024.
In his Address, entitled 'History, science and engineering a sustainable future', Mark asked the profession to consider how it can continue to make a difference for the better and lead the way to a sustainable world, as well as setting out his intention to use IChemE's convening power to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration and drawing attention to IChemE resources and initiatives such as the Sustainability Hub and DiscoverChemEng.
Mark's biography
Mark is Senior Vice President for leading energy services company Ameresco in the UK and a board member for the world-first Bristol City Leap public-private partnership. He spent his earlier career with WS Atkins and GlaxoSmithKline before joining Energyexcel in 2009, a start-up focused on energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions, which became part of Ameresco in 2014.
Actively involved in volunteering for IChemE since joining as an undergraduate, Mark joined the Energy Centre in 2016 and led the working group to publish our Energy and Resource Efficiency Guide. In 2019 he became Chair, overseeing the transition to a community of practice and leading the development of IChemE’s first climate change position statement.
Mark represents IChemE on the National Engineering Policy Centre (NEPC) Net Zero Group convened by the Royal Academy of Engineering and has represented IChemE at both UNFCCC COP22 and COP23.
Mark was elected a Fellow of IChemE in 2018, and awarded an MBE for his services to sustainable energy and energy efficiency in the Queen’s 2020 New Year Honours.
