IChemE in Australia hosts roundtable to discuss how to grow the capability to decarbonise heavy industry

3rd October 2025

Off the back of the successful roundtable in Melbourne, IChemE in Australia has hosted the second roundtable, this time in Adelaide, South Australia at the GHD offices. The discussion was focused on how to grow the capability to decarbonise heavy industry.

The day brought diverse perspectives from across sectors to explore practical pathways and collaborative opportunities.

Experts across industry and academia, as well as a selection of young professional and student leaders, shared their views in roundtable discussions.

Some key themes explored included:

  • why policies to drive industrial decarbonisation should be flexible, including technology-neutral wherever possible, to fully harness the benefits of innovation
  • importance of sharing more of the latest positive developments on industrial decarbonisation to help provide a balanced view of progress
  • facilitating greater connection between industry and IChemE's student members to help enhance job readiness and early career navigation.

Key insights of the discussion coming soon.

What is chemical engineering?

Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, mathematics and economics in the process of turning raw materials into everyday, and more specialist, products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Energy, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the industry sectors and products where chemical engineering plays a central role.
