Member Engagement Committee
The Member Engagement Committee was formed in late 2021 to bring a member focus to IChemE’s strategic aim to be acknowledged as a peer group leader in which an engaged membership receives and adds value. The committee supports the development of initiatives and activities that maximise member participation, improve outreach and collaboration, and support all members across the full member lifecycle.
The committee’s focus areas have been developed from member feedback received from the 2021 member engagement survey as follows:
- Career Journey Support: The ambition is to improve communication around the breadth of CPD within the membership package and refreshing mentoring to be scalable and accessible for the whole career journey.
- Students and Early Careers: The early careers working group has been formed to better understand the needs and expectations of student and early careers members for IChemE to remain relevant now and into the future.
- Volunteer Engagement: The goal is to ensure volunteering opportunities are openly advertised, help volunteers to build their networks and improve recognition of volunteer contributions.
The Member Engagement Committee is chaired by the Vice President Member Engagement and comprises of ten members plus three co-opted members. View our volunteer group structure.

Andrea Hosey
Vice President Membership Engagement
Andrea works in the energy transition studies sector in a senior leadership role based in Australia. She is an IChemE Fellow and set up the Member Engagement Committee in December 2021.
Sameen Barabhuiya
Committee Member
Sameen is a process engineer and an Associate Member of IChemE. He joined the Member Engagement Committee in 2021.
Leonardo Brandao
Committee Member
Leonardo Brandao was co-opted to the Member Engagement Committee in December 2023, offering the perspective of a Student Member to the committee.
Bill Harper
Committee Member
Bill is an IChemE Fellow. He was selected for the Member Engagement Committee in December 2023.
Utkarsha Joshi
Committee Member
Utkarsha is an engineering project manager and IChemE Fellow and he joined the Member Engagement Committee in 2021.
Mark Lester Real
Committee Member
Mark is a Process Engineer and an Associate Member of IChemE, and was selected for the Member Engagement Committee in December 2023.
Rachel Manning
Committee Member
Rachel is a student at University College Dublin, currently pursuing her Master's degree in chemical and bioprocess engineering. She was co-opted to the Member Engagement Committee as a student member in April 2024.
Ashfaq Palejwala
Committee Member
Ashfaq works as an energy transition and flow assurance business manager, is an IChemE Fellow and was selected for the Member Engagement Committee in December 2021.
Hugh Paterson
Committee Member
Hugh is a graduate chemical engineer specialising in renewable energy. Selected for the Member Engagement Committee in December 2023, Hugh is an Associate Member of IChemE.
Kai Seng Koh
Committee Member
Kai Seng is an academic researcher with experience in both fundamental and industrial research. He is a Chartered Member of IChemE and was selected for the Member Engagement Committee in December 2021.
Chioma Udeozor
Committee Member
Chioma is a UK project lead responsible for developing and implementing a circular chemical economy strategy for the North East of England. She is an Affiliate IChemE Member and was selected for the Member Engagement Committee in December 2023 .
Adriana Vargas-Colwill
Committee Member
Adriana is a Chartered Chemical Engineer with over ten years’ experience in the roles of process safety, process safety engineering and project management in the private and public sectors in the UK. Adriana was selected for the Member Engagement Committee in December 2023.
Tom Whateley
Committee Member
Tom is a Chartered Engineer and process engineering discipline leader in the oil and gas industry. Tom was selected for the Member Engagement Committee in December 2023.
