Valero
Valero Energy Corporation is an international manufacturer and marketer of transportation fuels and petrochemical products. Valero is a Fortune 50 company based in San Antonio, Texas, and it operates 15 petroleum refineries with a combined throughput capacity of approximately 3.1 million barrels per day and 14 ethanol plants with a combined production capacity of 1.73 billion gallons per year.
Valero acquired the Pembroke Refinery in Wales along with related marketing and logistics assets throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland, marking the company’s entry into Western Europe under Valero Energy Ltd. The Pembroke plant is one of Western Europe’s largest and most complex refineries, with a total throughput capacity of 270,000 barrels per day, and a Nelson complexity rating of 11.8.
The refinery officially opened in 1964 and plays a key role in the local communities employing approximately 500 staff and hundreds of term contractors. Volunteering is a key Valero Value and refinery staff are actively involved in coordinating and participating in volunteering events across the county. Located on the edge of the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast the refinery is ideally situated for those who love what the outdoors has to offer.
Pembroke Refinery has a long history in encouraging and developing engineers of the future. The refinery provides STEM outreach to local schools as well as paid undergraduate summer placements and internships in a range of engineering disciplines, including Chemical Engineering. In addition, the apprenticeship programme is a pathway for individuals to become qualified Process Operators or Electrical/Mechanical/Instrument Technicians.
Investing in the professional development of our workforce is at the heart of the business. Graduate Chemical Engineers are encouraged to gain their chartership via the established Accredited Company Training Scheme (ACTS). Here at the refinery we have a pool of senior Chemical Engineers who are committed to mentor the individual on their chartership journey and beyond ensuring that the graduate gains the experience needed to demonstrate their competence and commitment.
