Bursaries and prizes

IChemE, its special interest groups (SIGs) and regional member groups (MGs), offer a wide range of medals, awards, prizes and bursaries. Those listed below are available to students and those in the early stages of their career. All are open to members globally unless otherwise stated.

Medals and prizes

Ambassador Prize

The Ambassador Prize is awarded to an IChemE member who has made exceptional contributions, likely within an IChemE special interest group or member group, or as an ambassador for the Institution/profession more widely.

Food and Drink Special Interest Group undergraduate project Prize

The Food and Drink SIG’s undergraduate project Prize is awarded to students who have completed a design or research project on a food and drink processing-related topic as part of their IChemE accredited undergraduate course.

Junior Moulton Medal

The Junior Moulton Medal is awarded to the author or co-author of the best paper published by IChemE during the last year, who has graduated within the last ten years (excluding career breaks) at the time of submission.

Macnab-Lacey Prize

Awarded by the Sustainability Special Interest Group, the Macnab-Lacey Prize is awarded to the undergraduate student team whose design project submission best shows how chemical engineering practice can contribute to a more sustainable world.

Nicklin Medal

The Nicklin Medal is an early careers award that recognises talented chemical engineering researchers.

Palm Oil Processing Special Interest Group (POPSIG) Best Final Year Design Award

POPSIG awards the Best Final Year Design Award annually to a group of final year students whose design project revolves around palm oil processing.

SIESO Medal

The SIESO Medal is awarded annually to an individual or group of students (up to six) for the best presentation of a major accident and the learning outcomes.

Warner Prize

The Warner Prize is presented to an individual, normally in the early stages of their career, who has shown exceptional promise in the field of sustainable chemical process technology, nuclear technology or in making chemical engineering more accessible to a wider scientific community.

Bursaries

Andrew Legacy scheme – catalysis summer school bursary

IChemE provides funding for up to 20 PhD, EngD or MSc students to attend a week-long catalysis summer school held by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool, UK. The summer school is held once every two years, with the first held in 2022. One bursary per applicant can be awarded up to £3,000 to cover course fees, accommodation and travel (including visa application fees, where required).

Biochemical Engineering Special Interest Group (BESIG) student bursaries

Student bursaries are awarded to BESIG members to help cover the associated costs of attending a relevant conference, event or meeting. One bursary, per applicant, per year, can be awarded up to a maximum value of £100 (meetings in your country of origin), £250 (European meetings), or £500 (meetings outside Europe).

Food and Drink Special Interest Group conference bursaries

The Food and Drink SIG awards prizes of up to £250 to undergraduate and postgraduate students as an incentive to participate in a conference or event related to the food and drink industry. Find out more.

Palm Oil Processing Special Interest Group (POPSIG) Student Bursary

The Palm Oil Processing Special Interest Group provides student bursaries to undergraduate and postgraduate students to attend scientific conferences, workshops or forums which are related to palm oil processing.

Water Special Interest Group student support

IChemE’s Water SIG provides funding opportunities for students including covering expenses for groups of students and staff attending site visits connected with water or wastewater treatment; meeting fees associated with attending events organised by the Water SIG; covering postgraduate student expenses attending conferences to present papers, and more.

Members group prizes

Regional member groups may also offer student prizes, postgraduate prizes, design prizes etc. As these will only be relevant/open to members in those areas, we haven’t listed the details here. Please visit the webpages of your regional member group/s to see if they have anything coming up.

Awards

IChemE Global Awards

The annual IChemE Global Awards recognise and celebrate excellence. The awards cover all fields of chemical engineering including the education sector and industries such as food, water, energy, oil and gas. There is also a dedicated category for chemical engineers just starting out in their careers. Visit the Global Awards page for more information.

IChemE Malaysia Awards

The IChemE Malaysia Awards are held annually to celebrate the achievements of chemical engineers in Malaysia. Among the award categories are the Student Chapter Award, Young Industrialist Award and the Young Researcher Award.
