Joseph Greaves

The 2024 Ashok Kumar Fellowship has been awarded to Joseph Greaves, who began his work with the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) in January 2025.

Joseph studied for his Master of Engineering (MEng) degree in chemical engineering at the University of Sheffield, graduating in July 2024. His research focused on using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology to understand and quantify the environmental impacts of proton exchange membrane (PEM) and solid oxide electrolysers, two leading technologies for electrolytic hydrogen production. The project aimed to provide stakeholders and decision-makers in the hydrogen sector with a detailed comparative assessment of their respective environmental impact profiles.

Asked about how it felt to be the recipient, Joseph said: “I am extremely grateful to have been awarded the Ashok Kumar Fellowship, and I would like to thank both the IChemE and the Materials Processing Institute for this opportunity. Ashok Kumar was a pioneer in many ways, not least in his transition from a career in engineering to a life of public service, and I am proud to continue his legacy through this fellowship.

In a time of rapid change across the science and technology space, POST’s role in supporting evidence-based decision-making and policy development has never been so important. I am looking forward to joining the team and getting involved with their essential work.”
