Overview

Join the IChemE London & South East Member Group to visit Basingstoke Sewage Treatment Works (STW) -  a major wastewater and sludge treatment facility operated by Thames Water Utilities Ltd. Basingstoke STW is widely recognised as one of Thames Water’s most advanced operational and research active wastewater sites. There will be a presentation highlighting the key treatment processes on site and the operational and sustainability challenges and then a visit to the site itself including the anaerobic digestion, thermal hydrolysis and energy recovery plants.    Basingstoke STW generates significant amounts of electricity per day and is one of the UK’s most sustainable wastewater facilities. The itinerary will include a look at the site research facilities used by Thames Water pioneering the future of wastewater treatment and digestion, this will include anaerobic wastewater treatment, resource recovery, and the measurement of greenhouse gases.

Thames Water is the UK’s largest water and wastewater company, serving approximately 16 million customers across London and the Thames Valley. It supplies around 2.5–2.6 billion litres of drinking water per day and treats approximately 4.6 billion litres of wastewater daily.  It operates 100+ water treatment works and 360+ sewage treatment works.
