Overview
JCEC are collaborating with AGL to provide a site visit to the Newcastle Gas Storage Facility (NGSF) for industry professionals and students. This visit will provide an invaluable insight into the operational processes, safety protocols, and advanced systems used in gas storage and management.
The NGSF stores and handles large quantities of liquified natural gas (LNG) and it is classified as a major hazard facility (MHF) by the NSW government. The site contributes to state energy security by providing a reliable supply of natural gas. Gas is purchased from the NSW gas network and liquefied (-162°C) when demand is low and stored as LNG, then re-gasified to meet peak gas market requirements over winter and during periods of disruption.
Requirements and transport
Participants must own or be willing to procure their own PPE for the site visit which includes all of the following: steel-capped boots, 100% cotton long-sleeved shirts and full-length pants, hi-vis vest or clothing, safety glasses and hard hats. A mandatory online safety induction will need to be completed before the visit.
The NGSF is located in Tomago, Newcastle. Attendees are encouraged to drive, however public transport with rideshare services/taxis is possible. Depending on the attendance group, shuttling from Newcastle Station may be possible for a small number of people - please indicate whether you require or can assist with this within the registration form.
