Overview
As education continues to evolve, it's imperative that our methodologies adapt to cater to the needs of modern learners. Relying solely on textbooks or lecture notes falls short, especially considering the scarcity of opportunities for students to engage with actual industrial processes in many universities.
Chemical engineering, with its intricate processes and complex concepts, poses a unique challenge for educators. Traditional teaching methods often struggle to convey the depth and nuance of this field effectively. However, Virtual Reality (VR) presents a remarkable opportunity to transcend these limitations by offering dynamic, interactive learning experiences that immerse students in the world of chemical engineering.
Through interactive sessions, attendees will discover how VR can enhance engagement, comprehension, and retention among students, ultimately revolutionising the way chemical engineering is taught and learned. With hands-on demonstrations and insightful discussions, participants will not only gain practical knowledge but also valuable insights into the transformative potential of VR in chemical engineering education.
Our workshop is designed to introduce educators to newly developed VR tools tailored for teaching process safety effectively, fostering discussions on efficient content delivery methods. Ultimately, our initiative aims to bridge the gap between education and industry, better preparing engineering graduates for professional practice.
This event is part of the The PSE Asia series pseasia2024.org.
Speaker
Ir Dr Tan Jully, Associate Professor
Dr Tan earned her Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and a Master of Environmental Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), followed by a PhD from Universiti Malaya. With a focus on curriculum development, design, and accreditation, she has significantly impacted engineering education. Dr Tan's research explores various facets of engineering education. Currently, she holds the position of senior lecturer and course director of chemical engineering at Monash University Malaysia.
Ir Dr Mimi Haryani Hassim
Dr Hassim is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. She received her first degree in chemical engineering from UTM, Masters degree from Loughborough University, UK and doctoral degree from Helsinki University of Technology, Finland both in the area of inherent occupational health and industrial hygiene for chemical process industries.
She is an editor for several journals including the Process Safety and Environmental Protection journal and Annals of Work Exposure and Health. She has published more than 90 journals and indexed papers. She was recently appointed to be part of committee that prepared the National OSH Master Plan 2021-2025 (OSHMP25) for Malaysia and lead the national study on industrial compliance towards USECHH 2000 Regulation.
Dr Cindy Lee Lai Yeng
Dr Lai Yeng Lee graduated with BEng in chemical engineering from NUS and MSc and PhD in molecular engineering in chemical and biological systems under the Singapore-MIT Alliance. Dr Lai Yeng Lee has more than 10 years of experience in chemical engineering education and is presently senior lecturer with the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, National University of Singapore.
She is a committee member of the AIChE Singapore Local Section, the IChemE Education Special Interest Group and is also in the focus groups of Sustainable Production and Digitalisation, respectively. With a keen interest in curriculum development and promoting life-long learning, She has been actively developing and introducing new courses to the chemical engineering curriculum in the area of sustainability to prepare and educate students on new technologies and skills in sustainable development in the chemical industry.
