Overview

Drawing from his extensive three-decade career, Tim will provide insights and share his knowledge that cuts across R&D, ore-body sampling, feasibility studies, process development–tied to geological reserve data, FEED, EPCM, plant installations, commissioning, and plant optimisation for non-ferrous metals, precious metals, and more recently critical minerals. Tim will showcase a chemical engineer’s journey through mineral processing.

Tim Hughes, Principal Process Engineer, Gekko Systems

Tim joined Gekko in 2005 as Research and Development Manager where his focus was on new process and product development, especially relating to the development of the Python Processing Plant and the G-REX resin system. Tim now plays a critical role in flowsheet development and plant design, leading Gekko’s Process Engineering Team and has carried out the process design for the following major projects:

1. 250 t/h Python installation at the Kloof No.1 plant for Sibanye Gold South Africa, 2013
2. 50 t/h gold, lead, zinc ore processing plant for Aurelia Metals Ltd, Cobar, NSW, Australia, 2014
3. 100 t/h modular processing plant for TMAC Resources Ltd, Nunavut, Canada, 2016
4. 60 t/h processing plant for concentrating tungsten for Group 6 Metals, King Island, Tasmania.

Prior to joining Gekko, Tim had 15 years’ experience working in mineral processing operations throughout Australia. Much of this time was spent working as metallurgy superintendent and group metallurgist for MPI Mines Ltd based in Stawell, Victoria. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) – Honours (1989) and Post Graduate Diploma in Extractive Metallurgy (1992).
