Overview
Often, R&D efforts are stunted by lack of commercial investment and outcomes. At Calix, with our approach to our ‘minerals process decarbonisation through electrification and carbon capture’ R&D, technology and products, we demonstrate the need and value for engineers to learn and integrate other aspects that pertain to Technology Readiness into overall project plans before launching into developing technical solutions.
Speaker
Michael Wheatland, Manager, Sustainable Processing, Calix Limited
Michael is an IChemE Internationally Chartered Engineer turned Technology Commercialisation Lead who is passionate about sustainable outcomes through carbon reduction technology, sustainable processing, and clean energy utilisation projects.
Joining Calix in 2012, Michael was instrumental with the concept and design of the unique carbon negative mineral technology core to the Calix Flash Calcination process. He has led commercialisation initiatives of this home-grown Australian technology that is now being exported around the world to reduce environmental impact and improve processing cost and efficiency.
As the Manager Sustainable Processing at Calix Limited, Michael is responsible for the global rollout of the carbon neutral Calix Electric Flash Calciner technology across multiple mineral processing fields. Michael currently has projects running across three continents which are creating more sustainable outcomes for existing industry and implementing new technology and innovations to improve efficiency, emissions and costs of minerals processing.
Michael has successfully implemented multi-million dollar projects with Rio Tinto, BHP, Alcoa and now Calix, all of which contribute to his vision of a more sustainable world.
