Overview

Recent restrictions on the export of critical minerals have sparked a surge of global interest in securing these essential resources. The challenge is not a shortage of minerals worldwide, but the strategic imperative to diversify supply chains and strengthen resilience. In this session, Stephen Chandler will explore the fascinating world of critical mineral recovery from unexpected sources — including plant tailings and industrial side streams that are often overlooked.

Real-world examples will be discussed, such as gallium and germanium extraction from tailings, gallium recovery from Bayer liquor, and other innovative approaches that push the boundaries of resource utilisation. Alongside these successes, the talk will also examine projects that fell short, offering valuable lessons in what makes or breaks feasibility assessments.

Building on these case studies, Stephen will unpack the strategic feasibility assessment process for emerging critical mineral developments. Drawing on his extensive experience in project evaluation and resource strategy, he will highlight key drivers of feasibility, including technical readiness, market positioning, regulatory challenges, and sustainability considerations. By the end of the session, attendees will gain insights into both the opportunities and pitfalls of critical mineral recovery, and how strategic assessments shape the long-term success of projects in this rapidly evolving sector.
