Overview
A discussion with the Office of Nuclear Regulation (ONR)’s Head of Generic Design Assessment regarding its application to Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and its role in the wider regulator process, leading to a discussion on areas of interest and challenges for the progress on SMRs in the UK and beyond.
Speaker
Robert Exley, Superintending Inspector, ONR
Robert heads the ONR team undertaking the generic design assessment of the Rolls-Royce SMR. Before joining ONR, he worked in engineering consultancy for ten years supporting the UK’s operating nuclear power plant fleet. During his time in ONR, Robert worked on three earlier GDAs and was part of the immediate UK response to the events at Fukushima. He studied physics at university, ahead of specialising in deterministic accident analysis and safety cases.
