Oil, Gas and Energy Transition
About us
The oil and gas industry is undergoing profound changes as the global energy system transitions and the world strives to deliver a net zero economy. The energy transition will see oil and gas production and consumption decreasing, and oil and gas companies diversifying into lower carbon activities. IChemE members working in these areas have a vital role to play in the energy transition.
IChemE’s Special Interest Group for Oil Gas and Energy Transition (OG&ET SIG) draws together members, at all stages and from around the globe, with an interest in the oil and gas industry and the energy transition. This covers all aspects of the hydrocarbon and related industries, with a focus on:
- oil and gas – technology, operations, projects and business developments across the entire life-cycle and value chain
- energy transition – policy developments, emissions reduction, energy efficiency, renewable power, business diversification and career development as the industry evolves towards a net zero economy.
Objectives
- support, connect with and engage members working in oil, gas and the energy transition
- create networks of members with wider and more specific areas of interest, such as energy efficiency, new technologies, and policy engagement
- connect and collaborate with SIGs and other IChemE groups with related interests
- build awareness and knowledge about oil, gas and the energy transition by holding webinars and other activities
- develop relevant knowledge resources for students and members at all career stages
- stimulate engagement with governments, schools, the public and other stakeholders on the energy transition.
Activities
- webinars on relevant technical, leadership, career and policy topics
- in-person networking, learning and knowledge-sharing events
- projects to deliver knowledge resources, such as introductory guides and best-practice guides
- communication with members, including via a newsletter and articles in The Chemical Engineer
- engagement with governments
- collaboration with and learning from external groups, eg Ipieca (a global not-for-profit oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues), IOCGP (International Association of Oil and Gas Producers) and AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers)
- collaboration and knowledge sharing with other IChemE special interest groups and member groups.
