Overview

Two major intergovernmental conferences will take place in October and November with important implications for the oil and gas industry.

During this webinar, senior Ipieca representatives will share insights and outcomes from COP16 (Nature) and COP29 (Climate), and what they mean for the sector.

Nature and climate are connected. Healthy ecosystems can buffer the worst extremes of climate change and reduce greenhouse gases. However, ecosystems are impacted by climate change (the third biggest driver of global biodiversity loss). By addressing nature and climate together we can optimise benefits for both.

At the Biodiversity COP16 in Colombia, 21 October – 1 November, governments will demonstrate how they are implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework through their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans.

The latest Climate COP29 will be hosted in Azerbaijan, 11–22 November, and aims to gain commitments to more ambitious national plans to deliver deep, rapid and sustained emission reductions to keep the global temperature increase below 1.5°C, while leaving no one behind.

Ipieca is the global oil and gas association for advancing environmental and social performance across the energy transition. Founded at the request of the United Nations Environment Programme in 1974, it remains the industry's principal channel of engagement with the UN.

Artemis Kostareli, Senior Nature Manager, Ipieca

Artemis is the Director for Nature in Ipieca overseeing the environment portfolio which covers biodiversity and ecosystems services, water management issues as well as other environmental topics such as impact assessments.

She has been engaging with various stakeholders including UNEP, CBD, IUCN, etc., non-governmental organisations and other industry associations on environmental issues pertained to the oil and gas industry. She has represented Ipieca to numerous UN meetings and international events such as SPE HSE promoting the good environmental practice for the industry. She has been working for more than 10 years in sustainability in the oil and gas and alternative energies and in 2023, she was seconded to Shell as a Biodiversity Advisor for a year.

Prior to Ipieca, she worked for carbon consultancies delivering sustainability support to a variety of organisations. Artemis holds an MSc in Environmental Technology from Imperial College London.

Lorena Perez Bajo, Climate Director, Ipieca

Lorena is the Director for Climate in Ipieca. She joined Ipieca in August 2016 as Climate Change Manager. She holds a BSc Hons degree in Environmental Science from the University of Leon, Spain, and MSc in Global Environmental Change from King's College London.

Previously she worked as a sustainability analyst oriented toward minimising the impact of the business on water quantity and quality, air quality and waste from operations; environmental auditor; and health and safety technician environmental topics such as impact assessments. She has been engaging with various stakeholders including UNEP, CBD, IUCN, etc., non-governmental organisations and other industry associations on environmental issues pertained to the oil and gas industry.
