Overview
The global transition to net zero carbon emissions will have a profound impact on the oil and gas industry and beyond, and a sizeable group of IChemE members. Member surveys and regional workshops were used to understand chemical engineers’ experiences, concerns and needs, and formulate an action plan for IChemE and its members.
The study found that, while the proportion of oil and gas in the energy mix is expected to decrease, the pace and pathway of change is less clear and varies for different regions. However, all regions are progressing emissions reduction and energy efficiency, projects and diversifying their business and energy supply into renewables. The study observed that the chemical engineering fundamentals and industry experiences have proved broadly applicable, as evidenced by those members already transitioning into different sectors and roles. The report recommends five areas of action for IChemE and its members:
- Oil Gas and Transition – IChemE member support and networking;
- Government and policy engagement;
- Chemical engineering core curriculum and the next generation;
- Continuing Professional Development resources - including on carbon reduction technologies, business case studies, policy development and career transition experiences;
- Internal and external partnerships.
