Overview

The UK's transition to net zero will require new technologies, significant investment, enabling policy and a talented workforce. Further the foreseen costs of the currently proposed pathways for the transition are significant In his first part, David will will set out the case for electrification with gas and later hydrogen to reduce these costs at a system level, and in a second presentation he will extend this to looking at how hybridisation can also benefit consumers by offering them more choice and flexibility. The transition carries many system design and implementation uncertainties, and as a chemical engineer, project delivery practitioner and informed consumer, David will bring to bear his experience to show how these risks can be mitigated.

Speaker

David Simmonds, Retired Energy Professional

David is a retired, seasoned energy professional, now contributing to the discussions on our energy transition. He graduated with an honours degree (chemical engineering) from Imperial College, London. After four years contracting, David joined Shell International, where his career progressed through project engineering / development / management to asset management, working in the UK, Malaysia, Netherlands and Gabon. After joining BG Group in 2000, David led BG’s project, contracting, and engineering management teams. He subsequently spent time leading BG’s interests in Kazakhstan, Nigerian LNG developments and deep-water drilling campaign, and in Egypt on BG's deep-water gas and LNG programme. David is known to many for his influential series of articles in IChemE’s TCE magazine – “Engineering Net Zero”
