Overview
This webinar will share a comparative study of three level control strategies used in methanol distillation units at two plants. It highlights the lessons learned from each configuration's effectiveness and challenges. Configuration 1 in Plant A uses a single loop with a valve to control the level. It works well but struggles with pressure and flow changes, which can affect downstream processes. It requires careful tuning to avoid large level changes.
Configuration 2 in Plant B is more complex, combining level-to-flow control with feedforward compensation. However, it had issues like poor setpoint tracking and aggressive responses. The complexity did not lead to better performance. Configuration 3 in Plant B, using a master-slave setup, was more successful, as it managed pressure differences and provided stable control. The study concludes that different plants need tailored control strategies based on their specific challenges.
Speaker
Noor Amanina Ghazali, Process Control Engineer, PETRONAS
Noor Amanina Ghazali is a skilled Process Control Engineer currently with Group Technical Solutions, PD&T, PETRONAS, where she has served since March 2018. Her work primarily focuses on process control and optimization, including the development and commissioning of Advanced Process Control (APC) systems and dynamic property inferentials for distillation columns. She plays a key role in ensuring regulatory compliance through Clean Air Regulation audits for P-PEMS and is known for identifying and addressing performance gaps in process control systems and automation.
Before her current position, Noor Amanina was a Process Technologist at PETRONAS Chemicals Methanol (Labuan) Sdn Bhd from 2015 to 2018. In that role, she was responsible for monitoring and improving the performance of distillation and synthesis units and managing catalyst changeouts during plant turnarounds. She has led major projects such as the 2023 AGRU Operation Improvement at PC Fertilizer Sabah, where she applied a combination of statistical regression and first-principle methods to optimize CO₂ regenerator control. Her contributions also include developing a digital twin for H₂/N₂ ratio control in 2022, showcasing her deep technical acumen and innovation in process engineering.
