Palm Oil Processing
NCEEC 2024 - Into the Wonderland of ChemE
26th February 2024
Overview
National Chemical Engineering Exposure Camp (NCEEC) 2024 was organised by IChemE-Universiti Malaya Student Chapter. NCEEC 2024 was in partnership with IChemE's Palm Oil Processing Special Interest Group (POPSIG), in conjunction with Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC).
The event recorded 81 participants.
Objectives
NCEEC
- The programme aimed to facilitate the exposure of pre-university students to the chemical engineering course, profession and IChemE-UM SC
- The theme of NCEEC 2024 was "Into the Wonderland of ChemE"
POPSIG session
- To explain the roles of chemical engineer in the palm oil industry to the pre-university students
- To understand the contributions of palm oil industry to the UN SDGs
- To develop the leadership skills among the pre-university students
- To understand sustainable palm oil processing in industry
POPSIG session: Unlocking the Enigma: Journey into the Palm Oil Wonderland
Ng Han Teck, Assistant Vice President, Downstream Manufacturing, Genting Plantations Berhad delivered the talk.
Ir Ng unveiled that there are more than 450 palm oil mills in Malaysia, scattered throughout the country. The opportunities in the palm oil industry are to improve crude palm oil (CPO) extraction efficiency, biogas and biomass as renewable energy.
He also introduced other sectors of the palm oil businesses, such as nutraceutical extraction, packaging plant, biofuels plant, green chemicals and specialty fats plant. One example of the specialty fats was cocoa butter alternatives, which is more cost effective and affordable, vegan based, and as an alternative to scare exotic fats and increasing demand for cocoa butter.
Ir Ng demonstrated that chemical engineers need to maximise the conversion of raw materials into the desired products. Chemical engineers also need to minimise the use of utilities and wastage.
