Overview

The Nicklin Medal, which recognises talented chemical engineering early career researchers, was awarded to Dr Yuval Elani for his work in establishing Chemical Synthetic Biology as an emerging research discipline. Instead of re-designing cellular systems using traditional genetic and metabolic engineering techniques, Yuval has pioneered technologies for bottom-up construction of synthetic cells using biomolecular building blocks.

Yuval is demonstrating impact via multiple collaborations. The webinar will showcase the microfluidic and bio-membrane engineering technologies Yuval has recently developed to build functional bio-inspired soft matter compartments, as well as synthetic cells.

Yuval Elani, Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) & UKRI Future Leaders Fellow, Imperial College London

Yuval is a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. He studied Natural Sciences as an undergraduate (Cambridge, 2009), followed by a PhD in the Institute of Chemical Biology (Chemistry, Imperial College, 2015).

After his PhD he held a series of fellowships, working on various topics in biochemical engineering. He leads a diverse group of c. 25 researchers working on frontier research in applied biotechnology, including soft matter particle manufacture, microfluidics, bio-membrane engineering and synthetic biology.
