Webinar: Process Safety Ethics, Sharing and Learning
- Date From 12th October 2023
- Date To 12th October 2023
- Price Free of charge, open to all.
- Location Online: 12:00 BST. Duration: 1 hour.
Overview
2023 Hanson Medal winner, Dame Judith Hackitt, and 2023 Lees Medal winner, Peter Marsh, will discuss the rights and wrongs of decisions to share or withhold information following a process safety incident, and how learning lessons from incidents is a moral judgement.
In this webinar we will celebrate the successes of these medal winners and gain the speakers insights into the foundational engineering principles of ethics and learning lessons. We will remind ourselves why we can't take these matters for granted and can consider how we can all follow these principles in our own work.
The webinar will build on publications by both speakers. If you are not familiar with them, please take the time to look at 'Did you Sleep Well?' from the May 2022 issue of The Chemical Engineer, and the IChemE Lessons Learned Database, before this webinar.
Speakers
Dame Judith Hackitt, Chair, Enginuity
Dame Judith is a chemical engineer with a wealth of industrial and leadership experience, who's most high profile roles have included Director General of the Chemical Industries Association, Chair of the Health and Safety Executive, President of IChemE and Chair of the Independent Review of Building Regulations. She remains active, advising charities, organisations and governments on engineering and safety matters.
Dame Judith won the IChemE Hanson medal 2023 for her thought provoking and well written article: Ethics Series: Did you sleep well? in The Chemical Engineer, May 2022. The article draws on personal experience to reflect on the choice between making an expedient decision that people want to hear versus making a decision that allows you to know you have done the right thing when safety of people and the environment are at stake.
Peter Marsh, Director, XBP Refining Consultants
Peter Marsh is a chemical engineer with over 42 years of industrial experience in oil refining and engineering contracting businesses, who has worked with the highest process safety standards and best practices for many years, and who has recently authored and edited a Lessons Learned Database, which continues to expand.
Peter is a volunteer with the IChemE Safety and Loss Prevention Special Interest Group, which represents members with an interest in process safety.
