Overview

This webinar focuses on the economic, environmental and regulatory considerations of water reuse and recycling. Experts will be discussing the benefits and challenges of implementing water reuse and recycling practices and highlighted successful case studies. They also explore the role of regulations in promoting water reuse and recycling and emphasise the need for collaboration between stakeholders to ensure sustainable water management. The expert panelists will discuss the economic benefits of water reuse and recycling, environmental impact of these practices and the regulatory framework governing water reuse.

Speakers

Zaini Ujang, Secretary General, Ministry of Human Resources

Zaini is a senior public service official and professional environmental engineer, with expertise in higher education, human resources, climate change, green technology, climate governance, river rehabilitation and environmental sustainability. He received the Honorary Doctor of Science from Newcastle University (UK) in 2018. He was the Vice-Chancellor (President/Rector) of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia from 2008 to 2013 and later became the Secretary General of five federal ministries since 2013. Currently, Zaini is Secretary General, Ministry of Human Resources. He has been very instrumental in climate policy, especially carbon market and GHG net-zero policies. He has led the Malaysia delegation to COP26 and COP27, in Glasgow and Sharm-el-Sheikh respectively. He has also registered more than 20 intellectual property rights and published more than 300 technical papers and 50 books.

He is the president of Harvard Business School Alumni Club of Malaysia since 2016 and Vice-President International Water Association (2004-2006). Additionally, he received the Merdeka Award, the most prestigious award in Malaysia in 2009 for outstanding scholastic achievement and the order of Rising Sun with Gold and Silver Star from the Japanese Emperor in 2022.

Suhaimi Zaid, Principal Engineer Wastewater Technology, PETRONAS

Suhaimi worked for eight years in Chemical/Semiconductor Industry, in ​ShintEtsu Handotai (SEH) Sdn Bhd, Ulu Klang, Selangor, Malaysia (1999-2007), ​Process Engineer, Technology Department. He worked for ​15 years in the Oil & Gas Industry, ​Malaysian Refining Company Sdn Bhd (MRCSB), formerly known as PETRONAS Penapisan Melaka Sdn Bhd (PPMSB), Sg Udang, Melaka, Malaysia (2007-present), ​Principal Engineer Wastewater Technology, Technical Services Division, MRCSB.

He was a leader for PETRONAS Community of Practice (CoP) for Wastewater Technology fraternity (2012-present).

Wani Mastura binti Mohamad, Manager of Environmental Management Unit, Indah Water Konsortium

Wani received her Bachelor Degree in Biochemical Engineering from UKM in 2001 and had continued her Master studies majoring in Environmental Engineering at UiTM in 2015.

Wani joined IWK as Engineer in Environmental Management Unit in December 2001 and promoted to lead the team in 2017. She is currently responsible in preparing IWK annual carbon reporting and various environmental reporting with regards to IWK’s operational activities. She also has involved in various stakeholder engagement meetings such as Technical Working Group (under Waste Inventory) for Preparation of National Communication and Biennial Update Report on Climate Change, Development of EIA Guidelines for Sewerage Project and Development of Technical Standard For Use Of Reclaimed Water. She is one of the registered EIA Assistant Consultant with DOE that specialised in General Environmental Management, Wastewater, and Water Quality.

Leo Choe Peng, Associate Professor, Universiti Sains Malaysia

​​Leo focuses on the engineering aspects of membrane innovations for carbon capture and water reuse. She has published about 130 indexed journal papers with a h-index of 31. Her works were funded by the Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering, NICT Japan, American Chemical Society, Sime Darby, Malaysia Rubber Council and more. Besides Top Research Scientists Malaysia, she was named as the finalist of the AGFD Young Scientist Award (American Chemical Society), the recipient of the Women in Science Award (Ton Duc Thang University), Bintang Cemerlang Negeri (Yang di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang), and Leader in Innovation Fellowship (Royal Academy of Engineering). Her engineering innovations also granted the 1st Prize in GIST Catalyst, the Real Tech Holdings Award, the Grand Winner Award of Tech Plan Demo in Malaysia, and the Mitsui Chemicals Award. She served as the honorary secretary of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (Penang Branch), the committee for the American Chemical Society-Malaysia Chapter and the Institute of Materials Malaysia.​

Dhaarisheni Muniandy, Senior Executive, National Water Services Commission

Dhaarisheni is a senior executive attached with the Standard Technical and Compliance Division under the purview of Water and Sewerage Regulatory Department in Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Air Negara (SPAN). A graduate with Master of Science (Environmental Engineering), she has vast experience in water and sewerage regulatory ranging from governance of services provided by the operator to drafting of policies/regulations. As a professional in water and sewerage governance and regulatory, her knowledge includes policies drafting and development and regulatory framework. She is also actively involved in the development of technical documents. Thus, she is working on developing appropriate policies, necessary legal tools, and minimum standards for the use of sewage and by-products from sewage treatment so as to enable the commercializing of waste to wealth concept through resource recovery with the aim to minimize pollution and reduce carbon footprint in order to maintain ecological balance as well as to maximise economic benefits. She aims to raise awareness and inspire others to embrace resource recovery as one of the crucial aspects of environmental stewardship to battle against water scarcity.
