Early-Career Guggenheim Medal

Recognising excellence in early-career thermodynamics research

The Early-Career Guggenheim Medal, named after one of the most well-known thermodynamicists of the 20^th century, recognises a major contribution to research in the area of thermodynamics and complex fluids by an early career chemical engineer.

Edward A Guggenheim was professor at the University of Reading and is noted for his 1933 publication of the book Modern Thermodynamics, which defined the emerging field.

The Early-Career Guggenheim medal is awarded to one or more early career individuals who have made an outstanding recent contribution to research in thermodynamics and/or complex fluids. The contribution could encompass, but need not be limited to, new experimental techniques for the study of complex fluids at the molecular, mesoscopic, or macroscopic scale, new theoretical or computational developments for the calculation of thermodynamic properties, and/or discovery and formulation of new complex fluids of potential interest for technological processes and applications.

Nominees must, at the time of the awards nomination deadline, be within the first 15 years of their career (career breaks excluded).

Nominations will be considered by a panel of experts, who will recommend the winners to IChemE’s Medals and Prizes Committee. The Early-Career Guggenheim medal is awarded biennially (every two years) and alternates with the Guggenheim Medal.

Judging criteria

Criteria the Early-Career Guggenheim Medal will be judged against are:

1. originality – demonstrating the pioneering or advancement of a topic related to thermodynamics and/or complex fluids, which can be quantified in terms of publications, citations, and international standing
2. significance – potential impact on thermodynamics and related fields, and towards achieving the UN sustainable development goals.

How to submit a nomination

Nominations for the Early-Career Guggenheim Medal will open for Medals and Prizes 2028 and will run biennially with the Guggenheim Medal.

• we do accept self-nominations
• we do not accept nominations for sitting members of the Board of Trustees
• unless indicated otherwise, medals/prizes are generally awarded to individuals — a single medal shall be presented in all cases.
