Chartered Member

Chartered Member Stage 1: Educational Base

Those wishing to apply for the Stage 1 assessment must already be in membership.

Exemption through accredited qualifications

When you join IChemE as an Associate Member we will assess your qualifications. If you have met the requirements for Chartered Chemical Engineer then you will be exempt from further assessment of your underpinning knowledge and understanding.

There are two ways in which full exemption can be achieved, described below, but we will confirm your application route to you as part of your Associate Member application.

An accredited degree at M-Standard

Qualifications accredited at M-Standard meet the full academic requirements for Chartered Member (MIChemE) and Chartered Engineer (CEng).

M-Standard recognises integrated degrees that provide both the solid academic foundation (in chemical engineering) of a first cycle (or B-Standard), plus the advanced chemical engineering knowledge and skills of a second-cycle degree (F-Standard).

An accredited degree at B-Standard plus an accredited degree at F-Standard

First cycle degrees accredited at B-Standard meet the full academic requirement for Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

Second cycle degrees (eg an MSc) accredited at F-Standard meet the Engineering Council’s Further Learning requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng).

An accredited qualification at B-Standard may be supplemented by an IChemE accredited qualification at F-Standard to meet the academic requirements for Chartered Chemical Engineer.

Individual Case Procedure

Applicants that do not meet either of the two exemptions via accredited qualifications above will need to complete our Individual Case Procedure (ICP).

Technical Biography

The first element of ICP is the submission of a Technical Biography (TB). You will be required to provide evidence of work-based learning, details of your academic qualifications, including transcripts and certified copies of certificates, all to demonstrate how specified learning outcomes have been met.

All of your information can be added directly to the online application portal. However, if you find it useful to compile your work-based learning in an offline document beforehand, you can use the Technical Biography preparatory template to do this. You will then copy and paste the information into the application portal when you're ready, along with uploading your transcripts and certified certificates before submitting it all for review.

When completing your Technical Biography please read the ICP TB guidance document for assistance.

Most applicants will also be required to complete a Technical Report Questionnaire as part of the ICP process. However, should the ICP Reviewers determine that your submission demonstrates the standard required for Chartered membership then you will be able to process your application to Stage 2 - Initial Professional Development or, if you have already completed this, to Stage 3 - Professional Review.

Technical Report Questionnaire

The second element of the ICP route is the submission of a Technical Report Questionnaire (TRQ), which most applicants will be required to complete. A TRQ will be required where ICP reviewers have reviewed a TB, and require further information to complete their assessment of your underpinning knowledge and understanding.

The TRQ will ask for further evidence against specific gaps identified in the TB.

As before, you can enter the information required directly into the application portal, or use the TRQ preparatory template if you prefer to compile the information offline beforehand. In either case, you will be given details of the specific sections of the TRQ to complete before submitting the information for review.

When completing the questionnaire, please read the ICP TRQ example answers and the ICP TRQ guidance document for assistance.

If the TRQ adequately addresses these gaps, you will be invited to a TRQ interview. Successful completion of the TRQ will enable you to progress your application. However, should the reviewers find from the TRQ that the requirements are not met, you may be asked to undertake further learning or experience to address specific gaps and return to the process once this has been completed.
