Energy and climate action

IChemE Climate Change Briefing

Climate change is a key issue of our times. IChemE and its members are committed to working with all of our key stakeholders, from governments to communities around the world, to deliver a fair, safe and sustainable future.

Developed through consultation with members, the Institution’s Climate Change briefing recognises the role that chemical and process engineers and engineering have in helping to tackle climate change and meet the challenges of a fair and just transition.

This updated briefing recognises the role that chemical and process engineers can play, locally and on a global scale – including the development of new technologies, the use of best available techniques and application of a systems thinking approach. It also proposes ways in which individual members, as well as the Institution, should contribute to global efforts in addressing climate change and ensuring a world in which all can thrive.

The 2024 update enables the Institution to reemphasise its commitment to this crucial issue ahead of COP 29 in November 2024, where the 2024-25 IChemE President, Mark Apsey MBE, will meet with delegates including members of the UK and other governments to stress the contribution of chemical and process engineers to making meaningful and sustainable progress.
