Overview
This course will develop your understanding of the Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) methodology and how to apply it. LOPA is a semi-quantitative tool used for analysing and assessing risk on a process plant which uses an order of magnitude technique to evaluate the adequacy of existing or proposed layers of protection against known hazards.
The course will help you understand how significant scenarios are categorised and tolerable frequencies assigned for identified hazardous events. You will also learn to assign risk categories and determine how many Independent Protection Layers (IPLs) should be in place. The course also covers the specification and requirements for a protection layer to be accepted as an IPL.
All the essential LOPA steps are practised in workshops, including the use of software tools. Course materials include LOPA research papers, reference materials and further reading.

Trainer
David Clark, BEng, MIChemE, CEng, MEI
After graduating in chemical engineering from Teesside in 1987, David worked as a shift manager at Cargill’s Edible Oils processing facility in Hull.
In 1989, David commenced a long association with BP at the Saltend Chemicals Park before chairing his first HAZOP at Dimlington Gas Terminal in 2001. In 2009, he helped develop the BP HAZOP accreditation process. During this period, David co-established and developed a small engineering consultancy, where he worked for various companies across many sectors, before joining Nippon Gohsei in 2003 as Process Engineering Lead with spells as Interim Engineering Manager.
David's consultancy specialised in technical safety, and undertook over 30 HAZOPs, HAZIDs and LOPAs for BP in the UK and Norwegian sectors of the North Sea (offshore platforms, FPSO vessels and onshore facilities) and the BTC pipeline in Azerbaijan. Following the Macondo Incident, David was assigned to Jordan to conduct a HAZOP analysis to minimise the likelihood of a similar incident occurring on a drilling rig in the Middle East.
David has facilitated over 30 safety studies for Centrica Energy Storage, Tronox, Prax Lindsey Oil Refinery, Teekay Petrojarl / Enquest, GDF-Suez and Ciba Specialty Chemicals, amongst others. David is a Chartered Member of IChemE and currently works in the energy transition arena.
