IChemE launches new virtual work experience platform
30th September 2024
IChemE has launched its new virtual work experience programme, ‘Engineering a Sustainable World’. Enabling discovery of what chemical engineering is, and what it’s like to work as a chemical engineer, the programme will inspire the next generation of chemical and process engineers.
The challenges relating to work experience are well documented and highlighted in a new report from Engineering UK, which focuses on the urgent need to address STEM careers provision. In it, the report recognises the value of these virtual experiences, especially for young people in rural locations that may be far-removed from any STEM industries. It also recognises how valuable these platforms are as a precursor for real-time work experience by allowing young people to get a real sense of the industry they are interested in.
In IChemE's virtual work experience platform, participants will explore common misconceptions, take part in quizzes and activities, and have the opportunity to chat to practising engineers via the Ambassador platform. In addition, they will be able to try a real-world task through a mini project known as a ‘sprint’, which has been specially created by a working process engineer in the energy sector.
IChemE has partnered with Springpod to create the platform, which has been hugely supported by IChemE members from a variety of sectors. They have helped develop the content, with over 50 engineers submitting case studies or videos, being filmed for webinars, or taking part as Ambassadors. Both the virtual work experience programme and the sprint are aimed at school and college students aged 14 to 18.
Jo Cox, Head of Young People’s & Student Engagement, IChemE, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to get to explore the breadth of careers in different industries in chemical and process engineering. As well as engaging in virtual work experience, young people can also use this platform to try their hand at a real-world task.”
What is chemical engineering?
Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, mathematics and economics in the process of turning raw materials into everyday, and more specialist, products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Energy, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the industry sectors and products where chemical engineering plays a central role.
IChemE
The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) advances chemical engineering's contribution for the benefit of society. We facilitate the development of chemical engineering professionals and provide connections to a powerful network of around 30,000 members in more than 100 countries.
We support our members in applying their expertise and experience to make an influential contribution to solving major global challenges, and are the only organisation permitted to award Chartered Chemical Engineer status and Professional Process Safety Engineer registration.
