James Hill
James is a Senior Policy Manager for Electricity System Operation at Ofgem, the office of the gas and electricity markets authority in the UK.
He graduated from The University of Manchester in 2013 with an MEng in chemical engineering with industrial experience and gained a PhD in power networks from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2021. Between graduation and the PhD, James worked for two years as a design engineer at a large oil and gas EPC, with a focus on feasibility studies, including for carbon capture and storage.
He joined Ofgem as a policy manager in 2020, working on regulation of the electricity system operator. He was promoted to principal policy expert in 2022, with a focus on policy relating to electricity system balancing markets and the role of the system operator in network planning and system insights. This work sits central to the UK’s net zero / decarbonisation targets, ensuring a just transition and protecting consumers of today and of the future.
