Overview
Safe Isolation and Reinstatement of Plant (SIRP) is a key reference procedure for reducing loss of containment events in hazardous process industries. Previous industrial accidents including Piper Alpha have been partly a result of poor management of isolations.
This presentation will discuss how areas for improvement were identified and what steps were then taken. The presentation also considers isolation in a wider context to include isolation of safety critical equipment such as trip functions and pressure relief valves. These are often managed by a combination of locked valves and inhibits or bypasses. Safe management of these types of isolation is also critical.
Speaker
Matt Hastings, Process Eng TA
Matt graduated in 1993 with a degree in chemical engineering with first class honours from Exeter University.
Matt ended up working in the oil and gas industry pretty much by accident, having started with the fluid dynamics division for WS Atkins around 29 years ago. Although Atkins worked across different industries, the clients Matt worked for at the time were all oil and gas.
Matt then moved up to Aberdeen working for Altra and IGL prior to a four year stint in Western Australia. Returning to Aberdeen, Matt then worked on various projects prior to becoming Process TA for three different operators – Total, EnQuest and now with Ithaca Energy. Matt is a Fellow of the IChemE.
