Overview

The speaker, Liam Gordon, described the workings of the shaft and silo and talk through the main challenges facing the project and the current solution for the shaft and silo processing facility. Liam discussed the main areas and work packages of the project, the prototyping of five key pieces of equipment that form the downstream operations for the processing of the retrieved waste from the shaft and silo.

Liam also included a detailed description of the system, highlighting some of the issues that have been realised throughout prototyping and talk through the solutions that have been developed to overcome these issues, including some interesting topics which specifically involve chemical engineering.

Speaker

Liam Gordon, Chemical Engineer, NRS Dounreay

Liam graduated from the University of Strathclyde in 2021 with a 2:1 MEng degree in chemical engineering. After University, he progressed through the graduate scheme at Dounreay which involved working within the waste operations team, within a multidisciplinary engineering team at one of the facilities, as part of the fuels team working towards the consolidation of legacy waste and his current role, as part of the shaft and silo engineering team. As a chemical engineer he works within a multidisciplinary team to support the prototyping of five key pieces of equipment which will form the downstream operations of the process cell for the shaft and silo facility.
