Overview

At Apollo, our recent collaboration with Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC) on the HOP2 project examines the feasibility and innovation of designing hydrogen production facilities on offshore platforms. We evaluated various layout options, including single large assets, asset clusters, and bridge-linked platforms, to determine the most effective configurations.

Key to our approach was the emphasis on minimising offshore installation and commissioning efforts through integrated design solutions. We explored the reuse of existing substructures, considering topside air gaps for extreme weather and connection methods between new and old structures. The study provided detailed assessments of topside weight, safety philosophies, and structural developments, offering a comprehensive guide for future project phases.

The HOP2 project highlights the potential for transforming offshore hydrogen production, contributing to enhanced energy security and substantial emissions reduction. This study sets a new benchmark for efficient and safe offshore hydrogen production using existing assets and integrating advanced design solutions. This presentation will investigate the key findings of the HOP2 project.

Speaker

Graeme Leslie, Process and Tech Safety Manager, Apollo

Graeme is a Chartered Chemical Engineer with 15 years of experience, he has worked as a process engineer throughout the project lifecycle: various concept studies, FEED, and detailed design (EPC) projects through to commissioning and start-up. He has worked across upstream, midstream and downstream projects. He has been a lead and area lead engineer on large-scale engineering projects, working for several engineering contractors. He has been a secondee to multiple client operator teams in both process support and commissioning roles. He is currently the process technical authority for Serica Energy.
