Clean Energy Medal

The IChemE Clean Energy Medal is awarded to an individual* in recognition of outstanding service in the field of clean energy, for example mitigation of climate change, reduction of pollutant emission and reducing utilisation of non-renewable feedstocks.

The pursuit of clean energy is one of the most important areas facing chemical engineers today. The Clean Energy Special Interest Group introduced this medal in 2019 to recognise a sustained and successful track record in clean energy.

The medal is awarded to an individual in recognition of outstanding service in the field of Clean Energy, including but not limited to mitigation of climate change, reduction of pollutant emission and reducing utilisation of non-renewable feedstocks.

Areas of interest could be:

  • production of hydrogen and its use in chemical and power applications
  • CO2 capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS)
  • heat production, management and utilisation
  • bio-energy for fuels, heat and as a route to negative GHG emissions
  • recycling waste for energy production
  • co-generation of fossil and renewable fuels and their systems integration
  • energy storage systems (electrochemical, mechanical, thermal, amongst others)
  • energy efficiency.

The medal is open to all; nominees must demonstrate that chemical engineering principles or processes have been involved materially in the work.

Nominations are sought for anyone with a track record in the subject area. The Clean Energy medal is awarded every two years.

The IChemE’s Clean Energy Special Interest Group will judge the nominations and recommend a winner to the Medals and Prizes Committee.

Criteria this medal will be judged against are:

  1. impact of the contribution on advancing clean energy
  2. quality of the contribution
  3. period of time over which contribution was made.

*In an exceptional case, the medal can be awarded to a team.

How to nominate

Nominations will open in April 2026.

To make a nomination, open the online nomination form and complete the information requested, paying attention to the criteria the medal will be judged against.

Please note the following:

  • additional documents submitted outside the information provided in the nomination form will not be considered by the judges (unless specified otherwise)
  • we do not accept self-nominations
  • we do not accept nominations for sitting members of the Board of Trustees
  • unless indicated otherwise, medals/prizes are generally awarded to individuals — a single medal shall be presented in all cases.
